Sainz thinks criticism of Ferrari's Formula 1 strategy is 'unfair'

Carlos Sainz said criticism of calls for Ferrari's Formula 1 strategy was unfair, after his tactics helped Charles Leclerc take first place at the French Grand Prix.

In recent races Ferrari has been criticized for strategic decisions that cost big results, such as the decision not to change used Leclerc tires to the car's last speed during the British Grand Prix and the fatal mistake that cost it victory in Monaco. . .

But at Paul Rijkaard on Saturday, Ferrari embraced Sainz's plan ahead of the weekend to bring Leclerc home in the third quarter to nullify Red Bull's top speed advantage over the Scuderia just behind him.

The plan worked out perfectly, with Leclerc, who admits Ferrari missed the opening round in the third quarter, trailing Max Verstappen by 0.304sec.

Sainz, who will start from the rear of the grid due to a change in power unit components, says Ferrari's qualifying tactics showed how "strategic safe" the team was.

"I think we've had a lot of criticism in terms of the strategy," Sainz said. "And I think that's a little unfair because [with] every team this season there will be failures in tires, tire selection and everything.

"But I think the team has been very strong this year in terms of strategy and I think they're showing that today. Also the relationship with Charles, the way the team works, I still think in the times you're doing very well and we're working." Very well together.

"Good to see. I think you should give it to us and Ferrari, we had a great day."

Ferrari chose to take the penalty on Paul Rijkaard as they haven't yet presented Sainz's options for a strong comeback on the pitch.

When asked about the acceptable level of racing, Sainz replied: "I don't have a reference point, especially since we have half the season left and how I'm doing on the track now, as fast as I was in second place." Fourth, how fast you were in Austria, at Silverstone, I think it's not worth thinking about.

"I'll keep thinking about what I've been thinking lately, which is to get back to last year's level and I think today I'm going to get there and obviously keep that until the team decides [otherwise].

"But for me, with half the season left until the end of the season and everything that happened in the first half, there are still [options]."
