Britney Spears marries Sam Asgari in California

Britney Spears and Wissam Asgari arrive at the Los Angeles premiere of 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' at TCL China Theater on Monday, July 22, 2019.

Los Angeles (AFP) - Britney Spears married Sam Asgari in a Southern California ceremony, months after the pop star was released from police custody.

Asgari actor Brandon Cohen confirmed the couple's marriage. He said, "This day has come happily, they are married. I know she's been in love with him for a long time. She cares about me and supports me every step of the way."

The wedding took place nine months after their engagement and nearly seven months after Spears' tenure ended. As Spears struggles to put an end to the court case that has dominated many aspects of her life, Spears expresses her desire to marry Asgari and have children.

Spears got pregnant earlier this year but miscarried in March.

The couple met on the set of the music video "Slumber Party" in 2016.

The wedding day was not without unexpected drama: Spears' first husband was arrested after trying to break up their marriage.

Capt. Cameron Henderson, the mayor of Ventura County, said MPs responded to the search call shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday. The paper says the pop singer's first husband, Jason Alexander, was arrested at the concert venue.

Henderson says Alexander was arrested after officers noticed he had a warrant in another county.

Alexander took to Instagram Live when he approached security at the event. In a room that seemed almost empty but decorated, he told them Spears had invited him.

"She's my first wife, my only wife," said Alexander, who briefly married Spears' childhood friend in 2014. Their marriage lasted only 55 hours.

Spears was previously married to Kevin Federline, with whom she shares two sons, ages 14 and 15.
