Spanish prosecutor seeks eight years in prison for Shakira

MADRID (Reuters) - Spanish prosecutors on Friday sentenced Colombian star Shakira to eight years in prison for tax evasion worth 14.5 million euros.

The singer, who has sold more than 80 million records worldwide with hits like "Hips Don't Lie," earlier this week rejected a settlement offer from the attorney general's office to close the case.

She is accused of not paying taxes between 2012 and 2014, when Shakira says she does not live in Spain.

The prosecution document, seen by Reuters, confirms that Shakira was a regular resident of Spain between 2012 and 2014, and in May 2012 she bought a house in Barcelona that became a family home for her, her partner and her son, of Spanish origin in 2013.

She faces eight years in prison and a fine of more than 23 million euros ($23.5 million) if convicted. A trial date has not yet been set.

In response to a request for comment, Shakira's representatives cited an earlier statement sent on Wednesday in which she said she was "absolutely certain of her innocence" and considered the case a "total violation of her rights."

The 45-year-old singer, dubbed the Queen of Latin Pop, said she originally paid 17.2 million euros that the Spanish tax authorities told her she owed and says she has no tax debts.

The latest development in the tax case comes a month after Shakira and her husband, Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, announced their separation. Shakira, 45, and Pique, 35, have been together since 2011 and have two children.
