Barbecues, fireworks, and watching the grown-ups sip on as many wet sausages as possible. It's the Fourth of July and Nathan's famous and disgusting tradition of eating sausage is back.
As it was fifteen years ago, Joey Chestnut is the dominant title holder in the men's competition. The Chestnuts have only lost once since their first win in 2007, and they are improving in some ways. Last year he broke the world record by eating 76 hot dogs and a bun in 10 minutes, beating the previous record, set in 2020, by one.
If you like to think of eating hot dogs as a sport and your competitors are athletes, there is no athlete who has been more dominant in an individual sport than chestnuts. The way the man speaks defies faith, and in the words of host George Shea, he is not human.
How do you train for an event like this? Eat 50 boiled eggs.
While chestnut is the standout name, 2022 also marks the legend's return to the women's competition. Miki Sudou returns to competition after losing in 2021 due to pregnancy. Sudou has won seven of the last eight competitions and currently holds the women's world record with 48.5 hot dogs. Last year's winner, Michele Lascoe, won outright because Sudou didn't compete: she won the prize with 30.25. The idea of challenging someone to the women's lottery outside of Sudo is out of the question.
Hot Dog Eating Contest Rules
Contestants have 10 minutes to consume as many sausages and buns as possible. They have the right to water so they can eat, soak and dive. Contestants must keep their food for the duration of the contest to be counted.
In the event of a tie, there will be five "Eat-off" hot dogs, a race to see who can eat the top five fastest, and they will be named the winners.
