(CNN) June is Pride Month, when gays from around the world come together and celebrate the freedom to be themselves.

Pride parades are rooted in the grueling history of minorities struggling for decades to overcome prejudice and accept who they are.

The original organizers chose this month in honor of the Stonewall Uprising of June 1969 in New York City, which helped launch the modern gay rights movement. Most pride events take place in June each year, although some cities hold their celebrations at other times of the year.

Who celebrates it?

Pride events welcome anyone who feels their gender identity is out of the ordinary, though plenty of straight people also join in.

LGBTQ is an acronym that stands for gay, gay, bisexual, transgender, or transgender people. The term sometimes extends to LGBTQIA, to include intersex and asexual groups. Queer is a general term for people who are not straight; Intersex refers to those whose sex has not been clearly established due to genetic, hormonal or biological differences; Asexual describes those who do not experience sexual attraction.

These terms can also include people who have intersex fluids or those whose gender identity changes over time or depending on the situation.

In the early hours of June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village, New York, and began turning away customers. Tensions quickly escalated as shepherds resisted arrest and a growing crowd of bystanders pelted officers with bottles and coins. New York's gay community, exhausted after years of harassment by authorities, erupted in neighborhood riots that lasted three days.

The uprising became a catalyst for the nascent gay rights movement when organizations such as the Gay Liberation Front and the Gay Activists Alliance were formed, along the lines of the civil rights movement and the gay rights movement. Members organized protests, met with political leaders, and boycotted public meetings to hold these leaders accountable. A year after the Stonewall riots, the country's first gay pride parades were held.

In 2016, the area around the Stonewall Inn, which remains a popular nighttime spot today, was designated a National Monument.
